Abstract
Author studied 17 cases of operative wound infection to detect the causative factors among 205 cases of pulmonary resective operation and decortication, which included 132 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, 16 cases of bronchopleural fistula, 31 cases of lung abcess, 6 cases of bronchiectasis and 20 cases of empyema, with relation between operating season, duration of operating time, the number of operators, contamination of pleura during operation, operative technique, general condition of patient and the drug resistance of causative organisms, etc.
The summary is as followings;
1. Of 205 pulmonary resection cases 17 cases who developed post-operative wound infection were studied and the discussion was given on the causes of the wound infection.
2. From the seasonal point of view it was found that the occurrence of the post operative wound infection was least in the fall, showing 11.3 % the pneumonectomized, 7.4 % in the lobectomized and 7. 1 % in the decorticated cases.
3. It was assumed that important factors contributing to the causes of the wound infection related to the time of operation, the number of operators, the season, physical condition of the patient, the technique of the operator, post-operative bleeding, drug resistance of the infecting organisms, and post-operative complications.
4. Any post-operative wound infection not infrequently gives rise to fatal outcome in pneumonectomized cases, so it is the author¢¥s opinion that thorough and cautious means must always be considered in any case for the purpose of preventing the post-operative wound infection.
